Remodeling Permits in Hillsborough County
Some interior work is simple, while structural changes and electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or gas work can trigger separate permits and inspections.
Some details need verification
We could not verify all current requirements. Confirm the applicable details with the official agency before applying.
Residential alterations, renovations, and interior remodels in unincorporated Hillsborough County use HillsGovHub and the County's alteration checklist. Structural work requires appropriate plans and details; if no structural work is proposed, the County still expects a floor plan that clearly shows existing and proposed work. Changes to bearing walls, beams, columns, egress, windows/doors, plumbing, electrical, or mechanical systems can trigger additional plan content and trade permits. A recorded Notice of Commencement is required before the first inspection when applicable, owner-builders must satisfy the County's owner-builder rules, and projects in the Special Flood Hazard Area must comply with the County's floodplain requirements. Cosmetic work can be exempt, but structural or regulated-system work should not be assumed exempt.
