Hillsborough County’s residential backup generator checklist requires a residential electrical trade permit through HillsGovHub. A Florida-licensed EC or ER contractor can apply. Two inspections are required: electrical rough-in and electrical final. Before the first inspection, submit a recorded certified copy of the Notice of Commencement, as required by the County checklist.

Provide a digitally signed and sealed site plan prepared by a Florida Licensed Surveyor and Mapper or a design professional. The County checklist also describes an electrical-contractor-signed site plan option subject to its location instructions. The plan must show the proposed generator location, setback dimensions, and conformance, and must depict that the project will not encroach into an easement, wetland, or wetland setback. Check the parcel’s applicable zoning district and flood-hazard information. If the project is in a Special Flood Hazard Area, the site plan must show the minimum required design flood elevation referenced to NAVD1988.

For field inspections, provide the site plan; a contractor- or design-professional-signed-and-sealed load calculation when the generator unit is rated below the residence’s main service rating; installation manuals and documents showing manufacturer clearance requirements; evidence and location of load-shed units, if provided; and evidence of a fuel-gas permit or an indication that gas is by other. After approval of the rough-in inspection, the final electrical inspection may be scheduled. Generator placement and review therefore depend on the exact parcel and applicable site conditions, not solely on the equipment.
